Lt. Cmdr. Michael DeFazio, DDS, an active-duty dental officer in the U.S. Navy, hails from Sacramento, California. In 2008, he graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a BS in biological sciences and a minor in Italian. After graduating magna cum laude with a DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2013, he attended Navy Officer Development School in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon completion, he reported to Federal Healthcare Center Great Lakes for a one-year residency in advanced education in general dentistry.
DeFazio transferred to USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) out of San Diego, California, and completed a deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. From 2016 to 2019, DeFazio was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) in Naples, Italy, where he served as the department head of general dentistry. During his time at USNH Naples, he was charged with organizing and executing dental assist visits to the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System bases in both Deveselu, Romania, and Redzikowo, Poland. DeFazio then served as Annex Head of the San Mateo Dental Clinic while stationed with the 1st Dental Battalion at Camp Pendleton from 2019 to 2021.
In June 2023, DeFazio completed training in the Comprehensive Dentistry residency program at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, and he concurrently earned his MS in oral biology from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. While at Naval Postgraduate Dental School, DeFazio was recognized as the top first-year resident with the Dean’s Award for Excellence.
