This lecture focuses on the practice of modern sedation care in the dental office. Instruction focuses on intravenous lines, routes of administration, depth of sedation, informed consent, marketing with sedation, pros/cons to various dental care modalities with the array of sedation care options and related concepts. The lecture includes a brief review of the evolution of sedation, pitfalls to avoid, management of medical emergencies, modernized sedation techniques (inhalation, intravenous, oral and others), marketing, and medical-legal considerations. Particular focus is placed on safety, efficiency and new developments in sedation techniques, technology and pharmacology in the dental office.
This lecture can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of the four-part lecture/participation series. The three remaining courses are: WLKC1: “Pain Anxiety Management: History and Sedation Techniques” (lecture course); WPKC2: “Skills for Pain and Anxiety Management and Medical Emergencies” (participation course); and TPKC1: “Choose Your Own Ending! Clinical Scenarios for the Modern Dental Practitioner” (participation course).
This course is as part of the certificate program offered by the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists’ (ASDA’s) Institute for the Management of Pain and Anxiety (IMPA). All hours may be applied toward IMPA IV or oral sedation certification didactic hours. Tuition paid for this course will be applied as a credit toward IMPA moderate IV or oral certification course work.
