This course will emphasize the oral-systemic health link. The multiple categories of systemic diseases with oral manifestations will be discussed. Endocrine diseases, such as hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism and diabetes, have profound effects on the oral cavity. Hematologic conditions, including the anemias, cyclic neutropenia, leukemia, lymphoma and amyloidosis, have potential oral manifestations. Gastrointestinal diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and their effects on the oral cavity, will also be described. Iron and vitamin deficiencies can be identified in the mouth, mainly as a glossitis. Patients with autoimmune conditions, including Sjögren’s syndrome, sarcoidosis and lupus, may have oral manifestations. Dermatologic diseases, such as pemphigus, pemphigoid and erythema multiforme, may first appear in the mouth. Finally, systemic infections, such as tuberculosis, syphilis and deep fungal infections, are also interesting oral findings. The more recent pandemic viral infections of COVID-19 and mpox and their oral cavity effects will conclude the discussion. Several interactive patient cases will be included at the end of the session.
